It’s not news that Republicans aren’t exactly sold on the idea of human-caused climate change.

Yes, the subject came up at the first GOP primary debate this month, and the mere fact of the question is a sign of the times. But only two candidates—former Govs. Asa Hutchison and Nikki Haley—clearly indicated they believe the climate is changing due to human behavior. (Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy said “the climate change agenda is a hoax.”)

More broadly, polling consistently shows most Republicans see climate change as a small concern, if they are concerned about it at all. Decades of messaging about global warming and greenhouse gases and natural disasters haven’t changed that. (White evangelicals, as I’ve written for Heatmap, are quite climate-skeptical, but for more complicated reasons than is often reported.)

One thing might change Republican views on climate, though: insurance.
